Of course gym shoes will make the job for a short walk since all the major paths are pretty decent BUT, BUT, BUT hiking boots are far way better facing snakes, mud, cactus, spiders, and all other possible situations. Yes, there is no high peaks or canyons in Apalachicola, but my recommendation would still be light hiking boots that will reach your ankle. Gym shoes are made for gym and hiking boots are made for hiking !
