We had a one night cruise with “Real Journeys” Well worth it. A cruise around the sound and it’s arms - Kayaking Swimming On board commentary 10/10 Fabulous- and I don’t say that lightly!

Te Anau is a great place to stay and from which discover the area. This said, better to take the car to the cruising point as it is still some driving + the cruise takes some time too. Use the time saved to go on a heli tour to get another angle at the fjords as well as visiting the glowing worms cave, a unique experience!
