Carotid artery dissection can also cause pain in the neck. This condition occurs due to a tear in the artery, sometimes due to an injury. It is a medical emergency and can lead to a stroke.

Uncontrolled hypertension is frequently present at the time of aortic dissection. Syncope from sudden hypotension can occur. When the carotid arteries are involved stroke symptoms may occur.
