Since the adoption of the current Constitution of Bangladesh in 1972 the formal title of the office is the prime minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. From 1975 to 1991, the prime minister was appointed by the president while the president had executive power.

Sheikh Hasina [b] (born 28 September 1947) is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the tenth prime minister of Bangladesh from June 1996 to July 2001 and again from January 2009 to August 2024. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh.

The latest prime minister was Muhammad Yunus, appointed on 8 August 2024 by president Mohammed Shahabuddin. The longest serving prime minister in the country's history is Sheikh Hasina, who served from 6 January 2009 until her resignation on 5 August 2024.
