The Bornean orangutan is one of three orangutan species on the planet, and it is native to the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Like other orangutans, Bornean orangutans are known for their shaggy red or orange coats that cover nearly their whole body, though their face, ears, palms, and the soles of their feet have no hair.

The Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) is the world’s largest mammal that lives in a tree and is also one of the world’s greatest apes. Together with the Sumatran orangutan and Tapanuli orangutan, it belongs to the only genus of great apes native to Asia.

The Bornean Orangutan (also known as Bornean Orang-utan) is a small to average size hominid that is spread across the jungles of Borneo. Orangutans, the world’s largest tree-dwelling mammals in the world, are found on only two islands in the world – Borneo and Sumatra.

As the third-heaviest living nonhuman primate, after the Eastern Gorilla (Gorilla beringei) and Western Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla), the Bornean orangutan is the largest arboreal (tree-dwelling) mammal.

Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) are currently found on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo and generally inhabits swampy and hilly tropical rainforests. Bornean orangutans have a patchy distribution throughout the island and is completely absent from the southeast region.

The Bornean orangutan is a critically endangered species of great ape. There are three (possibly even four) subspecies of Bornean orangutan: Pongo pygmaeus morio, Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus, and Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii.
