In Goleta, you will find them at the Goleta Monarch Butterfly Preserve, also called the Ellwood Bluffs or Mesa. This area has great hiking most of the year because you hike through Eucalyptus groves and grassland overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Since 2017, the City of Goleta and its team of consultants have been studying Ellwood Mesa and the monarch butterfly grove to address urgent concerns of high fire risk and the rapidly declining characteristics of the monarch overwintering sites.

This is one of several monarch butterfly groves in California that are home to tens of thousands of butterflies during the winter months. In November to February you can find these eucalyptus trees covered in bright orange butterflies. It is quite spectacular to see in person.
