The thrombin time (TT), also known as the thrombin clotting time (TCT), is a blood test that measures the time it takes for a clot to form in the plasma of a blood sample containing anticoagulant, after an excess of thrombin has been added. [1]

The Thrombin Time involves only the addition of Bovine or Human Thrombin to citrated platelet poor plasma [PPP]. It, therefore, reflects the conversion of Fibrinogen to Fibrin but is also sensitive to the presence of inhibitors that may be present in the plasma e.g. Heparin.

A normal thrombin time is about 12 to 19 seconds. A longer thrombin time can mean low fibrinogen, high fibrinogen, or fibrinogen that's not working normally. It can also be because of medicines that affect blood clotting, such as heparin or argatroban.

Thrombin time is used to assess the overall functionality of the coagulation cascade, particularly the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. It helps in diagnosing and monitoring various bleeding disorders and assessing the efficacy of anticoagulant therapy. What are the normal values?
