The following is a list of seaplanes, which includes floatplanes and flying boats. A seaplane is any airplane that has the capability of landing and taking off from water, while an amphibian is a seaplane which can also operate from land.

The Martin P6M SeaMaster was an experimental strategic bomber flying boat built by the Glenn L. Martin Company for the United States Navy that almost entered service; production aircraft were built and Navy crews were undergoing operational training, with service entry expected in about six months, when the program was cancelled on 21 August 1959.

2010年9月20日 · There were four ship-launched observation/scouting floatplanes during the war. The Curtis SOC Seagull and the Vought OS2U were in action from the first day of the war. The disastrous Curtis S03C Seamew appeared in 1942 but was gone a year later. At the very end of the war, the much faster Curtis SC Seahawk became available for scouting.

During World War I-with the support of a fledgling aircraft industry-the U.S. Navy developed some excellent patrol flying boats. These included the only American-designed aircraft to see combat in the war as well as the NC series flying boats, with the NC-4 being the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic in 1919.

The flying boats operated from seaplane tenders off the coast of Vietnam and from shore bases in the Philippines from February 1965 to May 1967. The P5M evolved from the Martin PBM Mariner, which the U.S. Navy flew in large numbers during World War II.

The Navy and the Glenn L. Martin Company envisioned a striking force of P6M SeaMaster seaplanes carrying out nuclear bombing missions and pioneering atomic energy as a source of power for aircraft. Martin built nine P6M SeaMasters.

Beginning in World War I, the U.S. Navy operated floatplanes from battleships and cruisers—and from a few destroyers and a submarine. Destroyers originally were developed in the late 1800s as torpedo boat destroyers, but by the World War II era, they had evolved into multirole ships.
