We don't have an exact timeline for when he was born, but he was in his late 30s when he died in 1933.

To start with Alastor's side: Alastor grew up in the heartland of the American Southern Gothic mythos, where stories about crossroad demons, voodoo, and entities in the woods/swamps were rampant. It would make sense thematically to have him, during his human life, fill a role in a classic "Sold My Soul To The Devil For A Boon" story.

And, in the novels, Dexter is a vigilante serial killer who goes after other murderers who evaded the justice system, and who he is absolutely certain were guilty. "Great Alastor Altruist, died for his friends" - theres a few ways to look at this. At one point I thought it would mean his full name would end up being "Alastor Altruist", which would be such an ironic name for a serial killer and psychopath. But a better interpretation would be "Great Alastor, Altruist" which would be a better way of writing it.

It might not be entirely their call and more at the behest of the streaming service it will be on than anything.
