Ambergris Caye (pronounced Am-BUR-gris or Am-BUR-grease Key) is the largest of some 200 cayes that dot the coastline of Belize. Ambergris is 25 miles long and a little over a mile wide, in some places, and it is located in the clear shallow waters of the Caribbean Sea just off the tip of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize, and the main destination for travellers to this western Caribbean nation. San Pedro Town is the only town on the island. Ambergris Caye has been the hub of the areas maritime trade for centuries .

Getting to Ambergris Caye is easy, the island is serviced by hourly scheduled flights. A short twenty minute flight from the international airport brings one to the San Pedro airport, which is walking distance to town. Ferry service is also available. San Pedro's warm friendly casual atmosphere insures a perfect holiday.

The whole Ambergris island probably resulted from the accumulation of coral fragments along with silt from the Rio Hondo. According to the report of the British Honduras Land Use Survey Team of 1959, ‘the connected chains of coral islands known as Ambergris Caye was formed from the accumulation of coral fragments…first as a shoal patch.

"Dick", the first real underwater SCUBA diving pioneer in Belize, subsequently moved to Ambergris Caye and bought some property in the Bacalar Chico area. Subsequently "Dick" sold his property and moved to southern Belize off Punta Gorda, to an island called Frenchman's or Peter's Caye, and continued his diving explorations in southern Belize.
