2015年1月1日 · I don't have sheep- well actually I do but they don't count... we don't do anything with them. Having said that... some meat sheep breeds may do better in your region than others. Some have tails removed some don't. In my region the Katahdin does better than the Dorpers.

We routinely save the older sheep (and by older I mean that they could be anywhere from 2-8 years) for ourselves. Years ago we slaughtered a 7 or 8 year old Romney ram.

2010年3月16日 · I raise Katahdin hair sheep and butcher at 10 months. The meat is mild. It is not beef, it does have a stronger taste. Maybe more like venison. Hair sheep don’t have all the lanolin that wool sheep do. I think the lanolin contributes to the heavy taste. I’ve never gotten the knack of presenting the perfect leg of lamb.

There are several good meat breeds and again, you could check with your potential buyers and see if they have a preference. A purebred of each, mate them, and the offspring have the best meat-to-bone ratio and the fastest growth rate. I did that, and am quite happy with the results.
