On May 12, 1906, in the Tigers’ first-ever home track meet, Clemson defeated Georgia 59-49 on Bowman field. The meet came down to the last event, the Mile Run. Bleachers were emptied as the crowd lined the circuit. Clemson won the mile run and the contest by 10 points. Of the 12 events contested, Clemson won eight that day.

Bowman, an instructor in forge and foundry, and an assistant football coach who died at 23 on April 14, 1899, it was originally the parade ground for Clemson cadets and the home of Clemson University's first football, baseball, basketball teams, track and even soccer teams.

Bowman Field was used by Clemson's football team from 1898-1914; it was their first home field (the Tigers played only road or neutral site games in 1896 and 1897) and was replaced by Riggs Field. Overall, NC State had a record of 0-1 at this field.

Named for baseball coach R.T.V. Bowman, the coach of Clemson’s first sports team, the wide field separating campus from the town of Clemson originally served as the traditional parade ground for Clemson cadets, and it is still an unmistakable part of student life.

This is a large field at Clemson that is used by students a recreational area. It is also known as "Bowman Beach" when the weather is warm.
