No Scottish clan was ever a legally constituted body and Clan Campbell is no exception to that rule. While the existence and power of the Chiefs to lead their kinsmen and followers was increasingly acknowledged as a political fact of life in Scotland, clans were never organized into the system of government.

One of the accounts derived from the 17th century writings was the manuscript history of the Campbells of Craignish written by Alexander Campbell in about 1720 and edited by the 20th century Campbell genealogist Herbert Campbell for the Scottish History Society.

The castles of the three main branches of Clan Campbell were at Loudoun in Ayrshire, Kilchurn at the mouth of Glenurchy on Lochawe, and at Cawdor in Nairnshire near Inverness. Campbell tartan has only three colors: black, green and blue.

As a Campbell, or a member of a sept of Clan Campbell, you are blessed with a proud heritage that can be traced back many generations to earliest recorded history. It is a goal of the Society to help you learn more about, and to develop a better understanding and enjoyment of that heritage.

The Clan Campbell Society (North America) Genealogy Program serves as a clearing house of information concerning CAMPBELL data. The process is threefold: (1) gathering and processing data, (2) researching these data, and (3) analyzing and reporting findings.

Clan Campbell became the greatest of the clans because the people of the Clan were loyal to their Chiefs, not in any grovelling subservience but because their respect for the paternal authority of the position of Chief was freely given by free people.

When it comes to matters of Clan Campbell, beyond the intermural affairs of the Society, the "horse's mouth" is found at Inveraray Castle in Scotland where, naturally, the Chief and his chief executive are the ultimate authorities on questions of the clan.
