Scaphocephaly | Radiology Reference Article - Radiopaedia.org
2023年8月4日 · Scaphocephaly (also known as dolichocephaly) is the most common form of craniosynostosis, where premature closure of the sagittal suture results in an impediment to the lateral growth of the skull while anteroposterior growth continues, producing a classic elongated, yet narrow, skull.
Premature closure of the sagittal, coronal and metopic sutures are associated with scapho-cephaly or dolichocephaly, brachycephaly and trigono-cephaly, respectively. Plagiocephaly develops when only one coronal or lambdoid suture is closed. Scaphocephaly is the most frequent form of simple craniosynostosis.
Craniosynostosis - The Radiology Assistant
When a craniosynostosis is suspected, the first line imaging will be ultrasound or x-rays, depending on local expertise and preferences. Because of lack of radiation, ultrasound is the preferred method. In case of high clinical suspicion low dose 3D CT is preferred.
Prenatal ultrasonography of craniofacial abnormalities - PMC
Fetal magnetic resonance imaging can facilitate the evaluation of the palate, micrognathia, cranial sutures, brain, and other fetal structures. Invasive prenatal diagnostic techniques are indicated to exclude chromosomal abnormalities. Molecular analysis for some syndromes is feasible if the family history is suggestive.

Premature closure of sagittal suture. The sagittal suture permits growth in the width of the skull; premature closure results in a cranium that is high, long, and narrow (dolichocephaly). The calvarium is elongated in the antero-posterior (A-P) direction.

Dolichocephaly is the term given to a similar head shape, with decreased CI, but less keel shape. It is less often associated with craniosynostosis; it may be commonly seen in the premature infant and is more frequently a normal variant.
