1997年5月8日 · Since 1950, her family has had a flower shop not far from Downs Barracks, former home of the Blackhorse Regiment, an armored-cavalry (tank) unit.

Downs Barracks war die letzte Bezeichnung einer ehemaligen Kasernenanlage in der osthessischen Stadt Fulda. Sie war 1937 für die deutsche Wehrmacht neu errichtet worden und hieß bis 1945 „Ludendorff-Kaserne“. Von 1946 bis 1994 wurde sie von der US-Armee genutzt.

Following the return of the 11 æ Ú ACR from the Vietnam War, the 14 æ Ú ACR was reflagged as the 11 æ Ú ACR and served in the Fulda Gap from 1972 until 1994.

I served in Fulda 1974-1976 in the Regional Personnel Center, SP4 Robert M. Turner. We provided personnel management for all military personnel (and their dependents) from Fulda, Bad Hersfeld and Wildflecken.

The United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917. Due to the threat of a potential alliance between Mexico and Germany, a detachment of the 11th was stationed at Calexico, California, the nearest border crossing to the trapped German fleet.

Downs Barracks in Fulda was the headquarters of the American 14th Armored Cavalry Regiment, later replaced by the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. The cavalry had as many as 3,000 soldiers from the end of World War II until 1993.

Under U.S. use, the Kaserne was known as Downs Barracks. In 1993, following the end of the Cold War mission, the Kaserne was returned to German control, and it now houses several government and police offices, and small businesses.
