2019年6月4日 · Photo 7, My specimen (right) with an illustration of Halysites encrustans from Buehler's 1955 Yale-Peabody publication (left). It's now called Cystihalysites encrustans (Buehler): It's looking as though my specimen is likely Cystihalyistes encrustans, or something very similar, rather than Hexismia!

2010年11月22日 · This past summer I learned a new trick from the owner of the local rock shop, which is the removal of matrix from Halysites found in the local glacial till with muriatic acid. Turns a cool rock into a very cool fossil, though they are pretty fragile.

2020年9月15日 · I found this rock containing a Halysites 'chain coral' in the Silurian of Wisconsin. I soaked it in diluted muriatic acid for a few hours to partially dissolve the matrix and reveal the silicified coral fossil. Photos are before and after acid treatment.

2020年10月8日 · Here are 2 more Halysites 'chain coral' that I found in the Silurian of Wisconsin. The rocks were soaked in diluted muriatic acid for several hours, to partially dissolve the matrix and reveal the chain corals.

2012年1月31日 · Favosites are always all bunched together versus Halysites which run in chains. Species ID on Halysites would require much closer, hands-on inspection. I have two species from the Brassfield Limestone (Early Silurian) and the only reason I know they are two different species is the size of the coaralites.

2024年10月15日 · Up in Door County, at North Point, we found lots of tabulate fossils, several varieties. We kept seeing a weird bisected circular fossil, and since we couldn’t see many brachiopods or clams in the fossils, we couldn’t figure them out. One of the rocks I collected seemed to connect the circle and the halysites on the other side.

2011年11月13日 · In Halysites there are tiny corallites interspersed between the larger corallites in the "chain", whereas in Catenipora the tiny coralites are absent. You need to look carefully and have a specimen that is not too heavily silicified to tell them apart.
