Horizontal Curves Definitions and Formulas - ReviewCivilPE
There are MANY of these formulas thanks to geometry and trigonometry. This is only a small sampling so that you can view and get related to them when you are away from your reference materials. Horizontal Curve Definitions. LC or C – Long chord. D – Degree of Curve. E – External Distance. I – Intersection Angle. L – Length of Curve
The horizontal curves are, by definition, circular curves of radius R. The elements of a horizontal curve are shown in Figure 7.9 and summarized (with units) in Table 7.2.
Horizontal Curve Calculator, Formulas and Types
Here are some key horizontal curve formulas: Radius of Curvature (R): R = 5729.58 / D (where D is the degree of curve) Tangent Length (T): T = R * tan(Δ/2) (where Δ is the intersection angle)

CURVE FORMULAS •The relationship between the elements of a curve is expressed in a variety of formulas. Tangent Distance: The solution for the tangent distance (T) is a simple right-triangle solution. In the figure, both T and R are sides of a right triangle, with T being opposite to angle /2.
• (POC) POINT OF CURVE. The point of curve is any point along the curve. • (L) LENGTH OF CURVE. The length of curve is the distance from the PC to the PT, measured along the curve. • (T) TANGENT DISTANCE. The tangent distance is the distance along the tangents from the PI to the PC or the PT. These distances are equal on a simple curve.
Horizontal Curve Formulas Degree of Curve (D) – angle subtended by 100 ft arc along horizontal curve. Measure of “sharpness” of curve.
curve. The circular curve has a single, constant radius. The following figure shows the basic elements of a simple circular curve.
