MacLellan, or variants thereof, is a surname of Scottish or Irish origin. Clan MacLellan likely descends from Thomas of Galloway ( illegitimate son of Alan, Lord of Galloway ) where Mac-a-ghilledhiolan (pron. Mac-il-iolan.) means "The son of the Bastard."

History of Clan MacLellan. The ivy-grown ruins of the old Castle of Kirkcudbright, which form such a striking feature of the ancient county town of the Stewartry, cannot boast of any great antiquity, having been erected in the days of Queen Mary of Scotland.

Sir Robert Maclellan was Sir William’s great-great grandson and a courtier of both King James IV and Charles I. He was made Lord Kirkcudbright in 1633, and supported the King during the Civil War.

According to legend, in the 15th century King James II of Scotland offered a large reward for the capture of a notorious criminal. Sir William MacLellan hunted down and killed the criminal, and brought the severed head to King James to claim the reward.

This group has been established to study the genealogical DNA lineages of Clan MacLellan and those that have a surname etymology related to Mac-a-ghilledhiolan ( i.e. The Son of the Bastard - MacLolane ) or Giolla Fhaoláin ( i.e. Servant of St. Fillan ).

The surname Maclellan was first found in the former counties of Kirkcudbrightshire and Galloway where Chief Duncan MacLellan appears in a charter of Alexander II in 1217. Other early records of the surname include Gilbert M'Lolane, who lived around the year 1270.
