2019年8月2日 · Unlike most other fish in the ocean, shark skin is made of dermal denticles, or “skin teeth.” Despite their slick appearance, you can see under a microscope that sharks are almost completely covered in these denticles, also known as placoid scales.

Two effective, shark skin-inspired, ribletted surfaces were designed, their topologies were optimized, and their excellent drag reduction performances were verified by large eddy simulation.

This is a teaching activity to show students shark skin in detail under a dissecting microscope. They may be able to see some differences in skin structure and appearance of skin samples from different species of sharks.

We report optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of dermal denticles from three slowly swimming shark species for which the functional role of the dermal denticles is suggested as one of defense (possibly understood as anti-fouling) and/or abrasion strength.

We used gel-based profilometry, histology, and scanning electron microscopy to quantify differences in denticle morphology and surface topography of interbranchial skin denticles among 13 species of sharks to better understand the surface structure of this region.
