The shell is made of two pieces: the carapace (top) and the plastron (bottom), which are fused together on each side at the bridge. The carapace is covered by an outer layer of individual pieces called scutes, which are made of keratin.

The internal skeleton provides an anchor for the turtles’ muscles. With the exception of the leatherback, the spine is fused to the carapace. The long digits in the limbs of the turtle are fused together to form the flipper.
